Clifton started a community garden in the spring of 2024. There were a few experienced gardeners while others were pretty good at following instructions. We watered, pruned, and cheered as the earth yielded her fruit. The first harvest brought forth basil, chocolate mint, chives, tomatoes – yellow, red, purple, small and large, eggplants in purple and red, okra, squash, and peppers.
Most of us were unfamiliar with red eggplants. Some thought they were tomatoes. We would have known better if we had remembered to keep the identifying labels. Red eggplant is good roasted or added to other vegetables in a soup.
The community garden has led to discussions around recipes, many uses of basil and mint, and the health benefits of locally grown food. Even those of us who know little about farming or gardening have enjoyed partnering with God in making things grow. Both planting and harvesting are enjoyable when they happen in community. Moods are lifted, there is a sense of accomplishing something good, and there is joy in knowing that what we have done can benefit others.
The fall seedlings have been planted. We are expecting recognizable vegetables like greens, Brussels sprouts, and cauliflower. However, a neighbor shared an ice tray of seedlings with us, so there may be more surprises.
All are welcome to share in the community garden. Look for signage announcing what is ready for picking and educational classes on keeping healthy. The cost is FREE! However, donations are welcome.
