BEFORE I GO…

We have all been there: before taking a trip, we check and recheck that we have taken care of the needful things. As I prepare to leave, I am going through lists in my head, hoping not to forget anything or anyone. At the top of my list is remembering to write to my Clifton family.

Clifton, thank you. Thank you for being open to your first female pastor. After 19 years with Pastor Ward, it took some getting used to calling the pastor by a new name. There was also an adjustment to a different style of pastor and preacher. I had to adjust as well. This was my first time serving an African American congregation.

As I look back, it has been four wonderful years for me. There have been challenges along the way, such as building repairs, struggles with insurance companies, and the need to obtain a loan to cover the cost of a new heating and air conditioning system. However, no matter the test, Clifton, you stepped up to do whatever was needed. You truly lived into the vows made when you joined Clifton: to honor God and the church with your prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness. Thank you.

We have shared beautiful memories as we worshipped, served, and fellowshipped together. Things like sharing stories during the men’s fish fries, caroling on the front steps, laughter while making sandwiches, planting and picking vegetables, dancing in the parking lot, etc. I will never forget the Vacation Bible School when the children and Shelia Fults got into a water balloon fight. It was hilarious. Also funny was the Wesley Day celebration, where the adults were playing like children in the bouncy house and at the cakewalk.

Clifton, thank you for being open to trying new things. Continue to keep a spirit of adventure and hearts filled with love. I am sure God has great things planned for you.  I believe the words God spoke to Joshua are the ones he is saying to us. “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1:9). God will be with me, and God will be with you and your new pastor, Rev. Evelyn Austria.

Oh, one more thing before I go…

I love you!

Pastor Candy
