Some views of the church are that it is a boring place, not relevant to what is happening in the world, or a group of people always asking for money. However, Clifton United Methodist is helping to rebuff that idea. God’s house is a place of growth, healing, restoration, and joy.

The recent Vacation Bible School was hosted outdoors in the church parking lot. It was a one-day event. There was music, food, trivia games, Bible bingo, puzzles, watercolor paints, and water balloon tosses. The water balloon tosses turned into water balloon fights because certain little people were not patient enough to realize that tossed balloons fall and splatter water. Perhaps they realized it and preferred the thrill of hitting someone intentionally with a water balloon. Soon, the water war was on. Everyone was laughing, except for one person who had fake tears after receiving only a splattering of water at their feet. However, tears soon evaporated as more balloons were available for sneak attacks. What a beautiful display of love and joy as the children of God, young and old, were enjoying wholesome fun in the church parking lot.

Clifton is staying true to the commitment to be visible in the church parking lot this summer. Last month, we celebrated John Wesley’s Birthday with a community party. Next week, Clifton and the Monterey Community will host National Night Out, where law enforcement will visit with the community. Of course, there will be food and games.

September plans for parking lot usage include a movie night under the stars, where everyone brings a lawn chair, and enjoys a children-friendly movie, popcorn, and drinks. Also in September is a Harvest Sunday Festival, where gardeners will share vegetables from their gardens with the community. There will likely be how-to tips on gardening and many uses of herbs.

People have judged the church by rumors as well as experiences. As disciples of Jesus, we must represent Jesus well. We have a responsibility to help people see the God of love, the God who desires to be in relationship with them. They need to see that the people of God are full of life. Our worship can be loud, wild, crazy fun, as well as peaceful, encouraging, uplifting, and jovial.

Clifton, continue to enjoy your walk of faith, inviting others to join you in the journey because we have something the world desperately needs. Everyone needs Jesus, who offers not only salvation but a beautiful life. Let us tell our family, neighbors, and friends to join us at Clifton. Here at God’s house, we find spiritual growth, healing, restoration, hope, peace, and joy. On many days, we can experience it all right in the church parking lot.

Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! – Philippians 4:4
